Below is a list of a number of State Government Concessions that are available for pensioners and those on low incomes.

Cost of Living Concession

The Cost of Living Concession is designed to help with the general cost of living this means you can put the benefit towards your greatest needs, whether that is electricity, gas and water bills or council rates.

This concession is available to eligible South Australians on low or fixed incomes. See below;

  • Homeowner-occupiers who are pensioners and low-income earners - Up to $200
  • Homeowner-occupiers who are self-funded retirees with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card - Up to $100
  • Tenants who are pensioners, low-income earners or self-funded retirees with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card - Up to $100

Water and Sewage Concession

The Water and Sewage Concession is designed to help with the cost of water and sewerage rates.

This concession is available to eligible South Australians on low or fixed incomes. See below;

  • Minimum for owner occupier $185
  • Maximum for owner occupier $295
  • Minimum for tenants $120
  • Maximum for tenants $230

Energy Concession

The Energy Concession is designed to help with the cost of energy bills. This concession covers both electricity and gas payments (including LPG bottled gas) for up to $215 per year.

This concession is available to eligible South Australians on low or fixed incomes.

Medical Heating and Cooling Concession

The Medical Heating and Cooling Concession concession assists South Australians on a fixed or low income who have a clinically verified medical condition which requires the frequent use of heating or cooling in the home to prevent the severe worsening of their condition.

The concession is currently $215 per year and is available to eligible applicants in addition to the current energy concession.

Public Transport Concessions

South Australians on low or fixed incomes and Seniors Card holders may be eligible to receive a concession of around 50% of the normal fare on public transport.

If you are a Seniors Card holder you can travel free on Adelaide Metro public transport services (buses, trains, trams) during off peak periods 9:01am to 3:00pm and 7:01pm to 7:00am weekdays, all day on weekends and public holidays.

Emergency Services Levy

South Australian residents may be eligible to receive a State Government concession of up to $46 per year on the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) (fixed property) charged against their principal place of residence.

Residential park resident concessions

People who live in a residential park or a caravan park may be eligible to receive a single combined concession to help with their energy and water bills.

Spectacles scheme

Eligible South Australians may obtain reduced cost spectacles or for some medical conditions, contact lenses through the government's spectacles scheme.

Funeral assistance program

People who have recently experienced the death of a family member and who cannot raise the funds, after all options have been tried, may be eligible to receive a basic funeral and related expenses through the Funeral Assistance Program run by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion.

People unable to raise funds, who are on a Centrelink benefit or have a low income, may be able to receive assistance with a basic funeral. This is normally a cremation service, except in certain cultural circumstances. If the cultural requirements for a burial are not agreed, families may elect to pay the difference between a cremation and a burial.
